lyrics
Three in one house locked in battle with sleep.
Two of them are men and one of them is me.
Slapped awake at 7 again by alarm.
Dad’s 88; random chance, classic rock.
Relieved when Credence gets mid-song turnoff.
I’m in room next to his, where my child self slept.
My bed long gone, now it’s blow-up mattress.
He doesn’t close doors anymore don’t know why.
Naps half the day in a chair with one eye.
Each time he sleeps wonder if again he’ll rise.
Brother’s below part submerged ‘neath the earth.
Often wakes half-night then sleep can’t return.
Sometimes random or those nights when Dad calls:
Drain’s clogged again, to the ER must go.
When I’m far away, it’s his burden alone.
Will the news be the shock of call over miles?
Seems more likely than to time my arrive.
Though I dread ceaseless sleep, I know it’s ideal
compared to fatal fall or a final cough.
My night’s not done; I drift off and wonder:
Why though retired Dad still sets alarm?
